Village Podiatry Centers’ physicians are recognized leaders and innovators in the field of podiatric medicine. In our commitment to medical science research, we established the Clinical Research Division under the direction of Dr. Brent Nixon.
Dr. Nixon is a certified clinical trial investigator and a practicing podiatric surgeon of more than 30 years. He has been actively involved in numerous academic and clinical research projects as a primary investigator. The Village Podiatry Centers’ research team is comprised of Dr. Nixon and a specialized clinical staff trained in research design, data collection, and analysis.
Currently, two sites are directed by Dr. Nixon who monitors all patients participating in a clinical trial. The main research site is located on the campus of Emory Adventist Hospital in Smyrna, with a second site in Decatur.
MATRIX Clinical Trial for Non-Healing Diabetic Wounds
Currently Enrolling
Village Podiatry Centers was selected in 2008 by Cardium Therapeutics as a site for the year long MATRIX clinical trial. The trial will study the effects of a new product, Excellarate, for the potential treatment of patients with non-healing diabetic wounds. Village Podiatry Centers is the only MATRIX trial site in Georgia and among only 25 sites in the U.S. which include Johns Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore, MD and New York Presbyterian Hospital.
There are currently 20 million Americans who have diabetes and this number is expected to double by the year 2030. Over 850,000 chronic diabetic ulcers are diagnosed in the U.S. each year. Patients with non-healing ulcers are more susceptible to infections that may lead to amputation of the affected foot or leg.
The MATRIX trial is a randomized, double-blind safety and efficacy trial in which Excellarate is topically administered once or twice over the course of the study, with a goal of complete ulcer closure at 12 weeks or earlier.

To be considered for enrollment in the MATRIX clinical trial, patients must:
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Have a diagnosis of diabetes (Type I or II) requiring insulin or
hypoglycemic agents to control blood sugars - Have a foot ulcer that has been present for at least six weeks.
